Notessity began at the University of Canterbury. A business plan pitch for the company was entered into the 2020 Enterprise Launch Challenge held by the Entré student club. It did not win any prize money, but the pitch did earn entry into the Summer Startup Programme in November of that same year at the University's Centre for Entrepreneurship. After a lengthy process of writing a constitution, Notessity incorporated in April of 2022 and received charity status in August of 2022.
